Our continued growth and success has created the need for a Special Hazards Designer working out of our Baltimore, Maryland office. 

 

The Special Hazards Fire Protection Designer is responsible for designing specialized fire systems tailored for high-risk environments such as data centers, industrial facilities, power plants, and aircraft hangars. This role involves system layout, hydraulic calculations, code compliance, and coordination with project teams to ensure effective and compliant fire protection solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and layout special hazards fire suppression systems, including but not limited to:

    • Clean agent systems (e.g., FM-200, Novec 1230)

    • CO₂ systems

    • Foam suppression systems

    • Water mist systems

    • Explosion suppression or detection systems

  • Prepare detailed CAD and system schematics.

  • Perform hydraulic calculations and flow analysis to verify system performance.

  • Ensure design compliance with NFPA codes (e.g., NFPA 2001, 12, 750), local requirements, and client specifications.

  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to integrate fire protection systems into building plans.

  • Review submittals and technical specifications for accuracy and completeness.

  • Assist in developing bill of materials and scope documentation for estimating and procurement.

  • Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and inspection phases.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Fire Protection, Mechanical Design, or related field preferred.

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience designing fire protection systems, with a focus on special hazards.

  • Certifications: NICET Level II or higher in Special Hazards Systems or Fire Protection Engineering Technology preferred.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and fire modeling/simulation software.

    • Familiar with hydraulic calculation software

  • Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of NFPA standards and local fire codes.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project coordination skills.
