The Shop Production Manager is responsible for overseeing the in-house production of all fire extinguishers and pressurized cylinders processed at our facility, including 6-year maintenance, hydrostatic testing, and recertification. This role manages daily shop workflow, supervises personnel, ensures regulatory compliance, maintains documentation and inventory, and oversees logistics related to shipping and receiving of equipment. The manager is also responsible for maintaining the condition and safety of all shop equipment and ensuring full compliance with OSHA safety standards. This role reports to the local Director of Operations and is accountable to the Regional Director and Directors of each supported location for performance, turnaround times, and service quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all shop operations related to fire extinguisher servicing, including 6-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing for:
o Portable extinguishers (ABC, CO₂, Water, Class K, etc.)
o Wheeled units
o SCBA and specialty cylinders
o Restaurant system cylinders and Clean Agent tanks
- Supervise and lead a team of 5–20 production employees, including scheduling, task assignment, coaching, and performance management.
- Track and report on key production metrics (e.g., units processed per day, defect rate, turnaround time, rework).
- Track the number of units processed for each supported location to ensure accurate allocation of production costs across service areas.
- Maintain and reconcile inventory of replacement parts and swap stock used in exchange-based service programs.
- Ensure compliance with:
o DOT cylinder requalification protocols
o NFPA and CGA hydrostatic testing and maintenance standards
o Manufacturer service bulletins and labeling requirements
- Conduct quality control reviews of completed work and documentation before equipment is returned to customers or technicians.
- Manage proper documentation of service records, DOT test logs, and serialized cylinder tracking.
- Oversee shipping and receiving of cylinders and fire equipment between the processing shop and supported field locations, ensuring all transportation meets DOT, CGA, and company safety requirements.
- Maintain the overall condition, calibration, and safe operation of shop equipment, including hydrostatic test stations, compressors, fill stations, and mechanical tools; schedule and track preventative maintenance.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA safety regulations, including hazard communication, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of pressurized cylinders, and general shop safety practices.
- Lead safety training and enforcement of all safety protocols within the shop environment.
- Collaborate with field technicians and customer service representatives to address service inquiries or returned equipment.
- Support training efforts to keep shop staff up to date on testing procedures and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in fire extinguisher servicing, requalification, or shop management
- Knowledge of applicable compliance standards:
o NFPA 10 (portable extinguishers)
o CGA C-1, C-6, and related compressed gas guidelines
o DOT regulations for cylinder hydrotesting, transportation, and requalification
o OSHA requirements for industrial workplace safety
- Strong leadership skills and ability to manage a production team across multiple product types
- Experience with or ability to quickly learn shop production scheduling and inventory systems
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational, documentation, and process improvement capabilities
- Must be able to operate and maintain hydrostatic test equipment and pressurized systems safely
- DOT cylinder requalification certification (preferred or must obtain within 6 months)
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members, field technicians, and service managers
